What is a Sitz Bath?

A sitz bath is a shallow bath or basin in which you sit with your lower half to soak in warm water. Healing, soothing herbs and salts can also be added to help the healing process and relieve discomfort to this area. The warm water increases blood flow to the perineal and anal area which, in turn, promotes faster healing. This can be used for a variety of health related issues such as postpartum perineal trauma or swelling, haemorrhoids, Bartholin cysts, anal fissures and more.

Why Use a Sitz Bath?

During childbirth the perineum may tear, or an episiotomy is cut to ensure a safe delivery, sometimes the pushing phase can also cause swelling and discomfort following the birth. Your perineum can therefore be sore, swollen and inflamed for several weeks. As healing occurs there may be additional discomfort from itching. Soaking in a sitz bath can help speed the healing process and soothe irritated, itching or burning skin. If during the pregnancy you experienced haemorrhoids or the pushing phase aggravated these or caused the haemorrhoids to come further out, a sitz bath can help to relieve discomfort and reduced the swelling.

How to Take a Sitz Bath?

  • Wash your sitz bath with warm water and mild detergent before the first use
  • Add warm water or alternately to reduce swelling use cooler water
  • Optional – add postpartum sitz salts and herbs to encourage healing
  • If using herbs – infuse herbs in a cloth bag in 1l boiling water, steep for 1h. Add 10cm to the sitz bath with the salts. Ensure the water is still warm but not too hot. Enjoy up to three times a day for 15-20 mins at a time.
  • Gently pat your perineum dry and avoid wiping as this can be abrasive and delay any healing that is occurring
  • After each use wash with warm water and a mild detergent, rinse and let dry
